Invites have gone out by post and email and should arrive within the next few days for those that are due to receive an award. If you believe you are entitled to an award and not received it, then just contact Paul Jackson at LUEngineering@rmt.org.uk

SCAM ALERT

TO ALL BRANCHES, REGIONAL COUNCILS & REGIONAL OFFICES

SCAM ALERT

Dear Colleague,

I am most concerned to learn that our members are being contacted by non-union law firms to deal with their personal injury claims and disease claims on terms that may not be as advantageous as our Unions scheme.

Our members are being “cold called” by High Street firms and claims companies who are wooing them away from the Union scheme with the promise of “no win no fee schemes”, but hidden in the small print are hefty legal fees which are deducted from their compensation at the end of the case and which they weren’t told about.

We must warn our members against signing up to these schemes. The latest “cold calls” are chasing members to claim noise induced hearing loss. Our members should be made aware of these unscrupulous firms and pointed in the direction of the Unions Legal Services.

One call from the member to 0845 712 5495 will put them through to our solicitors Thompsons in England and Wales; Drummond Miller in Scotland and Christine McCrossan for offshore workers.

Our members will be given specialist good advice and their claims won’t be under settled and we won’t take deductions form their compensation.

We must defend our Union’s Legal Services and ensure that our members use them and get maximum benefit from doing so. By using our scheme they can be safe in the knowledge that they get 100% of their compensation.

Don’t let our members be ripped off, ensure that they get this message and the number above. I shall shortly be sending out posters to the Branches and Regional Offices for you to display in prominent places so that our members are fully informed.

I would be grateful if you could bring the contents of this Circular to the attention of your Branch members.

Yours sincerely

Mick Cash

General Secretary

Jackie D'Arby Retires

The Branch would like to thank Jackie for all the hard work that she has put into the Trade Union movement over the years. She has worked tirelessly to support her work colleagues and often represented people through the most appalling harassment and bullying possible.

She has been a role model for many people in our branch and we all wish her well in her retirement and look forward to seeing her on a regular basis at many events and demonstrations that Jackie has attended over the years

Violence Against Women

Please see the attached circular.

TO: THE SECRETARY

ALL BRANCHES AND REGIONAL COUNCILS

Dear Colleague,

UN DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Further to an earlier Council of Executives Decision, the union will be hosting an event to raise awareness about the UN Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on 25th November.  Please do make a note of the details:

Venue:                                 P21 Gallery, 21 Chalton Street, London NW1 1JD

Date:                     Tuesday 25th November 2014

Time:                     6.30pm light buffet

7.30pm speeches and presentations

The speeches will be followed by music and socialising.  The event is free and open to all RMT members.  It was an excellent event last year and I do encourage members to mark this important date.  Should you plan on attending, for the purposes of making the necessary catering arrangements, do let our Equal Opportunities Officer know (j.webb@rmt.org.uk).

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash

General Secretary

Rainbow International

AFFILIATION: RAINBOW INTERNATIONAL LGBT ACTIVIST SOLIDARITY FUND

At this year’s AGM the following resolution was passed unanimously:

“This Conference notes the important work of the Rainbow International LGBT Activist Solidarity Fund to provide vital financial assistance to frontline, grassroots, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights activists under attack or threat in the countries where being LGBT is illegal, and where people face discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.

This Conference also notes that:

  • Being gay remains illegal in 76 countries across the world, and in 10 of these is punishable by death or life imprisonment.
  • In February 2014, Ugandan President Museveni signed a bill into law criminalising LGBT people and punishing anyone who supports LGBT equality with life imprisonment.
  • In Russia, it is now illegal to speak in public about being LGBT, and Putin’s draconian anti-gay laws have led to an upsurge in homophobic vigilantism.
  • In January 2014, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan approved a law prescribing 14 years imprisonment for LGBT people. Since the signing of this law, there has been mob violence, many arrests, and the Nigerian LGBT community is living in fear.
  • Gambian President Yahya Jammeh recently said, “We will fight these vermin called homosexuals or gays the same way we are fighting malaria-causing mosquitoes”

This Conference shares the vision of the Rainbow International LGBT Activist Solidarity Fund of a world of true equality, justice, sexual liberation, and working class unity – free from any form of discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity.

This Conference calls upon the RMT to:

  • Affiliate to the Rainbow International LGBT Activist Solidarity Fund.
  • Encourage all RMT Regional Councils and Branches to affiliate.”

I am acting in accordance with this resolution and do indeed encourage all RMT Regional Councils and Branches to affiliate. The local rate is £50 and regional rate is £100.  More information can be found on their website http://www.rainbow-international-fund.org/affiliate-with-us

Yours sincerely,

Mick Cash

General Secretary

Solidarity: West Syrian Kurds

Below is an emergency resolution for discussion at our branch meeting on Tuesday 7th October. Come along and help discuss the matter.

LU Engineering/London Transport Regional Council Resolution (proposed and for discussion)

Solidarity with the West Syrian Kurds Under Sustained Attack from Islamic State ISIS

Since 15th September ISIS has intensified its attacks against the Kurdish population in Rojava (West Kurdistan/Northern Syria) and seized control of 60 villages near the border in a two-day campaign as they approach the town of Kobanê. Kobanê is Syria’s third-largest Kurdish town and would give the Islamic State (ISIS/IS) control of a long stretch of the country’s northern border with Turkey.

ISIS terrorists, militarily, logistically and politically supported by NATO member Turkey and funded by Saudi Arabia and Qatari States (despite them being in the coalition), are using US made heavy artillery and weapons seized from Iraq and Syria. ISIS has already taken over Iraq’s second largest city, Mosul, declaring an ‘Islamic Caliphate’ in the region and have displaced 500,000 Yazidi Kurds in Sinjar and kidnapped 3,000 women who are being sold as sex slaves. Thousands of children, disabled people and elderly have been kidnapped and executed in the Kurdish regions of Iraq and Syria. Kobanê is under the threat of massacre as happened in Sinjar. At the same time Turkish soldiers have been attacking people trying to cross the border of Kobanê -Suruc. So far one person has been killed and many wounded.
Turkey’s ultimate plan is to occupy Rojava Kurdistan by forcing international powers to create a buffer zone in this region. In this way they wish to terrorise the legitimate self-determination right of the Kurdish people in Turkey and Syria.
The US and EU-led ‘anti-ISIS’ coalition has not intervened despite witnessing the ongoing massacre of Kurds in Rojava. US airstrikes in Northern Syria have only helped to intensify ISIS attacks against Kobanê because ISIS terrorists fleeing the bombed area of Raqqa have moved to attack Kobanê. The coalition has also disregarded the Kurdish people’s appeal for help, despite the urgent need for humanitarian and military support. We are very concerned that the approach of international powers is leaving hundreds of thousands Kurdish civilians face-to-face with massacre.
The RMT LU Engineering Branch and London Transport Regional Council resolves to raise awareness and demand that the UK government support the Kurdish resistance.

The UK Government must provide the Kurdish forces with advanced weapons.
The UK, EU and US must officially recognise the three cantons declared as autonomous regions in Rojava Kurdistan (Northern Syria).

The UK government must enforce an embargo against all the states that support ISIS, beginning with Turkey.

NATO must stop its member Turkey aiding and arming ISIS immediately.
The UN must not permit a Buffer Zone on Kurdish land proposed by Turkey who openly supports ISIS.

The UN and international women’s organisations must investigate the situation of kidnapped women and begin a plan of action for their rescue.

THE RESISTANCE & DEFENCE OF KOBANE IS THE RESISTANCE & DEFENCE OF HUMANITY!
